Why Small Farmer Fail?

No one wanted to be a failure

We all want to be successful in whatever we do. When we decided to have a small farm, our objective is to become a successful farmer. But believe me, you will fail. Why? You will fail if you do the following:

  • Getting huge loans

This is one of the reasons why many small farmers fail. Businesses fail when they have too much debt. I know that you wanted to have a huge capital to start your “small” farm but having a huge loan to start your farm is not a good start. I know you need to spend money to kick-off your business and you cannot do that without borrowing money. You may say that you need to spend money to make an income but you need to know how to spend that money.

Everybody want to start with a new tractor or a greenhouse but you can buy it later. For the meantime, borrow as much equipment as you can. Go to government agencies that provide assistance to new farmers.

As a new farmer, you need to keep your expenses to the barest minimum until you know what to spend your money on. And when you already have the money to spend, buy the best quality equipment you can afford.

  • Start farming with no experience

You wanted to leave your job and move to a farming career and start a small farm to sell your produce at a local market, but you don’t know where to start and how to do it? If that is the case, then you have to start working in another small farm. Volunteer or apply as an apprentice. Practical learning will give you an experience which is something you will not learn from reading books or guides and tips from the internet. You have to learn the practical way before you jump into doing it on your own.

After gaining actual farming experience as an apprentice or volunteer, now you can start planning and find out what produce sells well and produce that has potential to sell well and how to sell all of your farm produce.

  • Negative thinker

“We must get rid of negativity because we are all played by doubts.” – Jules Dervaes, DerVaes Farm

In everything you do, if you start thinking negatively then you will definitely fail. Always believe that you will succeed and do the right thing. If you are familiar with Jules Dervaes, he said “We must get rid of negativity because we are all played by doubts.”

  • Not finishing what you have started

People fail because they are easily discouraged. When you started something and an unfortunate event occurred, don’t stop. Finish what you have been doing until its completion. You are definitely not going to make money for something that is not completed. Start a project and complete the project before moving on to the next one.

  • Keeping that pride

Why some people fail? Because they keep their pride. There are things that we cannot do it alone and we need help but we cannot ask for help because you don’t want to your pride. Ask advice from the experts and even your farmer friends. There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers. Ask for help when you need it, but don’t ask too often or people will stop answering your questions.

  • Stop learning

Farming is like any other profession such as lawyers, accountants, teachers, etc. You need to update your knowledge. It should not stop from the first harvest and first profit. Learn from your friends, other farmers, technical people and other enthusiasts. You can even learn from a newbie.

  • You Think Farming is not a Business.

This is one of the reasons why many small farmers failed. They considered farming as an occupation. Stop the “worker” thinking. When you started farming, you are a business and therefore you need to treat your farm as a business. Farming is a business. As a business, you need to keep records of all your activities including the money spent and the money received. There are a lot of templates that you can use to record your farm operation.

As a new farmer myself, I don’t want to fail and I will definitely follow the above-mentioned tips. Good luck to all of us newbies!

  1. I can related with most of these things because my father was a small farmer. The major problems for small farmers is clearing loan that he burrowed for his farm, not finishing what was started. One thing that is also a problem which is not included in the article is related to marketing the produce.
